Black Mink index

hook Tiemco 2457
hook size(s) 10 and 12
thread dark brown
head brass bead 1/8th inch
rib Gutterman's W331 metalic gold
abdomen dark brown + black dyed mink, thin near bend, tapered thick toward head
notes: A great fall, winter and spring (coldwater) trout nymph for streams and rivers. Also works well in lakes for trout. Although the pattern calls for dyed dark brown mink fur, the key is to have lots of the black guard hairs in the dubbing. A side note about the ribbing material: Gutermann's W331 metalic gold sewing thread is a wonderful ribbing. It's sparkly and strong. Available in sewing shops at about one buck for 50 metres. This is an impressionistic fly best fished at the bottom. Try tying a 10-inch section of tippet at the bend and dropping a small midge pupa at the end. The only downside of this fly is that mountain whitefish also love it. But what are you gonna do, since it's a trout favorite as well? Be certain to pick out the black guard hairs.

Caddis Case Nymph index

hook any nymph hook
hook size(s) 6-12
thread black 6/0
body-under any floss wrapped to resemble case
body cover floss with cement or epoxy
body-over dipped in sand or stream bed material
body spray with clear enamel if cement used
head black ostrich herl or dubbing
notes: The caddis larva makes a case for protection. The caddis peeks out the top. The materials to make this case are small grains of sand or stone from the stream bed. Each stream has a unique supply that you can collect and use as the body over of your caddis case. I collect samples from various streams. Each case has a unique look reflected in the material collected. The case also adds weight therefore you don't need to weight the nymph with beads or lead wire.

Clark Lynn Nymph index

hook Mustad 79580 or 69890
hook size(s) 4-10, most popular is 8
thread light yellow
tail clump of fox squirrel
body-over continuation of tail, 1 piece
body-under lead wire - optional
body pale yellow yarn
hackle-body badger or brown
head yellow
notes: Invented by Clark Lynn of Clarkston Michigan. The best imitation for nymph of the hexagenia Limbata mayfly. Effective during the emergence but it imitates a food source that trout feed upon all year around. H. Limbata has a two year cycle from egg to adult and must leave its burrow in the mucka an average of thirty times to shed it outer husk in order to grow making it easy prey for the fish every month of the year. Has also been found to be deadly for Steelhead at all times of the year. Tie in tail and overbody so that the black part of squirrel hair is over the eye end of the hook shank. Trim top of palmered hackle before tying down overbody of squirrel. Overbody will have to be held back while wrapping body and palmering hackle.
